High Chaparral, The

NBC-TV Western series (1967-1971), from creator/producer/writer David Dortort ("Bonanza", 1959-1973). The Cannon family consisted of Leif Erickson ("Big John"), Cameron Mitchell ("Uncle Buck"), Mark Slade (Billy Blue), and Linda Cristal (Victoria, "Big John's" wife); together, they operated "The High Chaparral" ranch in the Arizona Territory, during the 1870s. Victoria's brother, Henry Darrow (Manolito Montoya), and the ranch hands, Don Collier (Sam), Robert Hoy (Joe), Rodolfo Acosta (Vasquero), Ted Markland (Reno), Roberto Contreras (Pedro), Jerry Summers (Ira), and Rudy Ramos (Wind), handled the day-to-day problems that always seemed to turn up: Indian outbreaks, conflicts with the Mexicans, and threats from rustlers! NOTE: "The Buffalo Soldiers" episode (Nov. 22, 1968), was pitched to NBC as a pilot for a series.
