Lone Ranger, The

ABC-TV Western series (1949-1957), and a radio hit from Jan., 1933 to May, 1956), over WXYZ (Detroit) and ABC network, among others. Creator Fran Striker hit everlasting pay dirt with the "masked man and his faithful Indian companion, Tonto,"and the timely use of The William Tell Overture as the show's theme song. But the outstanding actors for the long-running success of the series were Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger) and Jay Silverheels (Tonto), when they made their debut on ABC-TV on Sept. 15, 1949. The show caught on overnight, making huge stars of Moore and Silverheels, and selling tons and tons of cereal for their sponsor. General Mills.
